Their work, with an emphasis on lamps and vessels, created a warm, almost everyday environment within the special ambiance of the space – one could imagine living with the pieces. Work by undergraduates Anna Hell and Rahel Pfrommer rounded out this sense of home.

And, as has become tradition, everyday another uniquely staged aperitivo engaged the visitors in a direct and often playful manner.

concept, beyond various testing phases to the prototypes.

NETwork 3D stitching furniture – lamp, stool, armchair and bowl series

The „NETwork 3D stitching furniture“ project combines new high technologies, applied to traditional stitching techniques, with a collection of edited textile objects.

The objects of the „NETwork 3D stitching furniture“ collection – armchairs, stools, bowls and lamps – are “plotted” onto a carrier by the means of a programmable stitching machine in order to create a “pop-up-object”, that raises from the surface as if it was extruded into its third dimension. The stitched textile honeycomb structures are resin-impregnated in order to make them rigid and constructive.

The result is a series of extremely light and transparent objects, that seem to float in the space as textile 3D-meta-network.

Lift – occasional roto mould tables

Fascinated by plastics and the possibilities offered by roto moulding technologies, Mark Braun designed Lift, an occasional table series. Each table has two areas for flexible use – for example one for a pack of books you want to read and the other for the book you are currently reading. By using pure geometric forms the design of Lift communicates the beauty of plastics in colour and surface finish, combined with the great possibilities of large roto mould plastic shapes.

e27: Pit – floor- and table light

The Pit lamp is based on a simple idea: e27 have analysed and abstracted the principle of tilting, searching for a way to integrate it into the design of a product.

OLIVERVO: Spherology – installation and design process

Spherology is made with polyethylene nets, cotton, aluminium and rubber. A prototype and a design process.

Two years ago, they came up with the innovative idea of embodying fiber optics in furniture. The furniture they produce are completely safe, because the source of light is not on the surface of furniture, but in a light box inside them. The light travels through the optical fiber on the surface of furniture, so no heat is transmitted and there is no problem in case liquid is dropped on the fabric.

This year, during the Salone del Mobile in Milan they wanted to present a new collection of furniture so they chose the young Greek designer Lina Tsakli to design for them.

The pshilosophy of the new collection follows a futuristic style inspired by the 60′s and i tried to use the light as a tool to build atmosphere.

The workshops and exhibition, are the idea of Alessandro Guerriero and Riccardo Dalisi and are promoted by NABA Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti and the Triennale Design Museum.

The idea of a Tin Compasses award exists over and above any reference to the famous and prestigious Golden Compasses and the role that this has played in the history of international design.

“In the current climate of recession and the consequent changes taking place in every economic, social and cultural aspect, the Tin Compasses aim is to emphasise the revived need for inventions, ideas, projects, procedures and techniques in the artisan sector of small productions, embryonic, organizational initiatives and micro productions with a clear social purpose, at times even alternatives to the use of mechanical procedures and in the industrial sector at long last focussed on sustainability.” – is written in Manifesto of the Compasses.

The set up which is in place host a selection created by Riccardo Dalisi, the objects produced in the workshops and a number of satellite exhibitions.

Triennale Bovisa also host the exhibition of a series of ‘collections’ of objects that intersect the world of the Tin Compasses. There are three main ‘collections’ surrounded by a series of other ‘collected’ objects (material rather than immaterial) on show for the entire duration of the event.

Furthermore, thirty workshops  inspired by a series of key words taken out of the Manifesto Compass Tin (invention, change, scale, micro, sustainability, experimentation, drama, action …) are open to the public.

These workshops are conducted by designers and other creative people  from different departments of  NABA and and other international universities (Central St. Martins, Architectural Association School of Design, University of Dundee, Virginia Commonwealth University, Holon Institute of Technology and others).

Each workshop is open to anyone and every day the space become an unique  big laboratory that visitors can see, touch, test and experiment with real-time exposition of different ‘collections’ of objects and ideas created during the workshops.

Over the coming months, an international jury and the audience will select the most deserving projects, based on several categories of valuation: a total of 12 awards , 11 on the basis of many categories covered by a special jury and  1 audience award .

As for chairs, armchairs and sofas, this year we chose the interesting models that characteristics are style, innovation and functionality.

A united effort where timeless natural materials and traditional intuitive working techniques give life to a series of open projects, born from the minds of designers ( Elia Mangia, Giopato&Coombes, Elisa Honkanen, Jim Hannon-Tan, Line Depping&Jakob Jørgensen and Peter Johansen ) who, on this occasion, have decided to work free from the commercial and practical constraints of industry.

First Round by Elia Mangia is a chair heavily inspired by traditional handcraft, referring in particular to the technique used to fix metal working tools to the handle. It consists of a chair in solid cedar wood turned by hand, around which is wrapped a sheet of painted aluminium to form the backrest. Three chairs, with three different forms and colours.

Alfred by Giopato&Coombes is  the special armchair. The structure, in maple wood, is composed of a line segmented in space, forming the seat and backrest. Fixed to the structure is a high tension network of fabric. Two feather-filled cushions make the armchair comfortable.

Fly by Elisa Honkanen; Coat hook in the shape of an aeroplane.

Kaldei by Jim Hannon-Tan; Inspired by the recognition that the stain-glass doorway in Victoria Cafe in Milan looked a lot like the geometry found in a familiar CAD program. Kaldei mixes the traditional artisan techniques of lead lighting with computer generated 3D forms.

Io by Jakob Joergensenis a storage system that provides an organic three-dimensional effect in space. It achieves a sculptural expression with simple means, and in a free way it breaks the horizontal and vertical lines.

Handle chair by Peter Johansen is made by a frame in steel and a seat in pressed veneer. The idea was to make a simple and compact chair which easily can be shipped in a small box and be assembled by the user. On the frame I have made a handle which is very useful but also gives the chair its character. A simple and poetic chair.

This Factory conceived by Markus Benesch, art director of the design week event, talks with artists and designer as Gruppo T, Maria Christina Hamel, Carnovsky, De Vecchi Milano 1935.

The niches and the rooms of the exhibition hide, and at the same time reveal, the novelties presented by the artists-designer selected to create wallcoverings which belong to the collection WonD, nearby the novelties of the catalogue Jannelli&Volpi 2010.

WHO ARE THE MAIN CHARACTERS OF WALLPAPER FACTORY ?

Jannelli&Volpi wanted to combine the different languages and experiences of designer-artists asking them to interpret the WonD (Wallpaper on Demand) wallcoverings. New and amazing graphics which reflect the sensorial and emotional effects are the result.

The first is Markus Benesch, designer and art director of the Jannelli&Volpi 2010 event presents some novelties in the wallpaper world, with tridimensional inspiration in his Curious Boy collection.

Gruppo T: the largest groups of Kinetic and ‘planned’ Art and in Italy, founded in 1959 by Davide Boriani and Gabriele De Vecchi to which joined Giovanni Anceschi, Gianni Colombo and Grazia Varisco. Gruppo T introduced an innovative art form, through the realization of perceptual experiments and interactive environments designed to encourage and create different and unexpected reactions in the viewer. Present in the galery the “Great tire object.Environment variable volume”.

Tubular propylene elements will be continually inflated and then deflated: so the space will be re-structured, enveloping the visitors who will be forced to remove the balls in order to “see” what is going around.

Maria Christina Hamel, famous designer-artist who presents her collection Double Sense –My Secret Room, which plays on the idea of ambiguity, hidden in sensual symbols, female and erotic. In the locations her furniture create and re-create the space.

Carnovsky by Francesco Rugi and Silvia Quintanilla present RGB, a collection which is hidden an optic effect (visible in its complexity through unique filters): three overlapping images create a very special effect, which covers and enriches the spaces, giving them an unexpected modern character.

De Vecchi Milano 1935, historical silversmiths. Gabriele and Matteo De Vecchi express the very perceptive sense of the material by using shape and colour to create amazing optical effect.
