We could say for her “an interior architect-product designer”. Güldal Aydinli-Giia makes and designs any and everything, For this reason, we are speaking with Giia about design, her projects and future.
Where do you live?
I live in Milano, but I am from Cyprus where I also have a studio., and because of project work there I am travelling to and from.
Your last trip….and next one will be?
My last trip was to Cyprus, and my next trip will be to New York to ICFF after Salone del Mobile. Actually I would like to be going to Amalfi or Maldives on holiday, but the way things are now, unfortunately there isn’t time!
Who is your favorite interior designer?
Actually one favourite, I can’t name, I like many designers and the variety is what I like, for example Antonio Citterio and Partners, Daniele Lo Scalzo Moschieri, Simon Conder and work of storagemilano, Matteo Nunziati.
Your favourite product designed by you, why?
Hmmm, favourite one again it’s difficult, but one that has a special place for me is Domino. Partly because it’s development was such an eventful process to say the least, and also because it was, in the end, a rewarding and satisfying result and I’m very proud of that.
Your inspiration for your first project?
My first professional project was a home interior design for a client in Cyprus, and my inspiration was the prospect of designing professionally itself. The challenge was to design for the specific client and trying to balance all the material and colour selection etc. To suit them and their home. I was very much inspired by the challenge.
How would you describe your current work?
Part of my work is remains interior and furniture design, and recently I’ve been branching out into fashion accessory design where I am designing unique neck pieces with a variety of materials. With this work I have freedom to craft and create pieces, to play with materials and forms. And I hope that this freedom and playfulness comes across as unique and characteristic of my style.
What are you expecting from next event “Salone del Mobile 2009“. Shall we see your new project there?
Honestly I’m really interested to see how the big brands are dealing with the economic crisis, in terms of new ideas and also the potential lack of good new ideas. I’ve exhibited twice in Salone Satellite already, but as with the lack of time for holidays, it has been too much to ask to present again this year, although I have plans and projects in development for Salone 2010.
Where do you see yourself in ten years time?
I am positive about the future and I’d be pretty happy to see my plans come to reality, other than that I don’t like to talk to much about the future, rather keep working and moving forward.
